Students Attend Brooklyn Book Festival

On Sunday, September 20, 2015, Professor Mary D’Ambrosio and students in her Magazine Writing and Travel Writing classes attended the tenth annual Brooklyn Book Festival in New York.  The group’s literary endeavor was highlighted by talks and readings from notable authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Salman Rushdie, and Pico Iyer, 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences recipient Joseph Stiglitz, and award-winning journalists Farai Chideya and Pamela Newkirk. Each student in the Magazine Writing course chose an author to profile for which they read his or her work, attended his or her talk, and even worked to arrange an interview with their author of choice. Students enrolled in the Travel Writing class, after studying Pico Iyer’s “Falling Off the Map” that detailed his experiences in North Korea, had the chance to hear Iyer speak. Professor D’Ambrosio said of the event, “The festival is a great opportunity for students to make live connections with writers they know mainly from their words on the page.” The festival allowed the students’ learning experiences to transcend the classroom, and to be able to apply what they have learned to an actual, field-oriented experience.
